Tips to create the best experience: Before you subscribe
Find your new favorite creator
The Fan/Creator experience works best when it’s enjoyable for all parties. While it’s easy to act on impulse, you can improve your chances of a great experience (and decrease trial-and-error) if you follow a few simple steps before you commit to subscribing.
None of these takes much time or effort, but can make a big difference in the overall experience.
Determine your desired experience
Almost every creator page falls somewhere on a spectrum between content-centric, and experience-centric. If you’re a fan who prefers to purchase and consume content (primarily viewing wall content and purchasing PPV and custom content), then you’ll want to find a creator whose page is more content-centric. If you’re a fan seeking a more interactive experience (primarily engaging in chatting, sexting or a girlfriend experience), then a creator whose page is more toward the experience-centric end of the spectrum is probably the best fit for you.
Taking just a bit of time to consider what sort of page you’ll most enjoy will help increase your chances of finding the right match.
Once you’ve determined your desired experience . . .
Define your budget
It should come as no surprise that the creator economy is built on commerce, so you should certainly expect to spend some money when interacting with your new favorite creator. While there are some pages that provide something of an “all-inclusive” experience with the subscription fee, the vast majority of pages (especially those at the experience-centric end of the spectrum) rely on tips and add-on sales. Defining your budget before subscribing will go a long way to avoid buyer’s remorse, which is often referred to as “post-nut clarity.”
There is no standardized pricing and each creator is free to set pricing wherever they choose, so having a predefined budget will help you to avoid overspending.
The trickiest part about this one is that a creator’s pricing is not always very apparent before you’ve subscribed so there will be some trial-and-error to this, but you can help increase your chances of an enjoyable experience if you . . .
Do a little research
This doesn’t have to be super in-depth, but doing a bit of research can help you find the best creator to match your desires. There are a few good ways to gather a bit of information to help you decide if the creator who caught your eye is the right fit for you:
Look at their promotional pages. Most creators promote on a social platform, so check out their social page(s) and see if they have a bio or “about me and my page” post to help you learn more about them and get a bit of a preview of what you can expect when you subscribe.
Check their platform bio. The best creator pages will use the bio section to let you know what to expect when you subscribe to their page. They’ll list the types of content they offer, any extra experiences available, and probably even a little insight into their personality.
Look for reviews. This will be the best resource for what you can expect as a subscriber, since reviews are a direct reflection of the experiences from other subscribers. While it’s true that some reviews are more helpful than others (don’t worry; we’ll have an upcoming post on the anatomy of a good review), reviews in general can provide insight into what you typically aren’t able to see until after you’ve committed to a subscription. It’s why Fanscout exists: we want to help highlight the best creator experiences out there. If you find a creator and want to know more, search for reviews on our page.
While there is no absolute way to guarantee a positive experience with your next creator, we do feel that taking these few simple steps can help you to narrow the field and eliminate at least some of the guesswork and trial-and-error.
We’ll follow up with another post on ways to enhance your experience after you’ve made the commitment to subscribe, so check back for that soon.
