Zulu Padilla

@zulupadilla

Zulu Padilla is a truly unique and talented creator who explores various mediums of art, including paintings, photographs, and films. His artistic practice encompasses installations of painting and photography, a performance called "Reinitas" in the Sirenato parade in Coney Island, Brooklyn, and a film that tells the story of neotropical migration through queer characters from the Americas. The common thread connecting these three aspects or projects is the fluidity or tension between uprootedness, freedom, and beauty. Currently, Zulu is working on installations that incorporate the theme of neotropical bird migration and the imagery of used, decomposed, and abandoned condoms in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. Every summer, "Reinitas" comes alive with friends who celebrate and dance to commemorate the birth of new birds and their preparation for the next journey south. Meanwhile, his film continues to be in its research and creation stage. Zulu's creative process involves investigating and imagining stories he wishes to narrate within his project called Warblers. This mix-media film uses the subject of neotropical bird migration as a narrative counterpoint to human stories that explore our journeys through self-identification and love. Zulu's perspective is shaped by nature, urban environments, their mysteries, and oxymorons. He conducts research, collects data, and engages with places and communities involved in bird migration. One fascinating aspect highlighted by Zulu is the parallel between warbler migration and song with his own experiences migrating south during winters to participate in Barranquilla Carnival group "La Puntica no Ma'". This irreverent queer humor charms "la puntica," which has multiple meanings beyond just the tip of a penis. Zulu sees his work with "La Puntica no Ma'" as an ideal scenario for incorporating contemporary art narratives with popular folk traditions from his hometown. His drive to travel great distances every year for this creatively expressive and sexually charged action intertwines art, folk traditions, nature's plan, and the homing instincts found in migrating birds. Zulu Padilla's work is a captivating exploration of migration, identity, and the beauty that lies within these interconnected themes.
