Nia Hampton is a remarkable and influential creator who excels in storytelling and teaching. Hailing from West Baltimore, Maryland, Nia has been an active member of her local arts community since she was young, but her breakthrough moment came in 2015 during the Black Lives Matter movement. Her appearance in an Al Jazeera documentary exploring the connection between police brutality in Baltimore and Bahia, Brazil garnered over 1 million views, launching her into an international freelance career. Nia's cultural reviews and features on the global black experience have been published in prestigious outlets such as Vice.com, VillageVoice.com, City Paper, Dazed Digital.com, Genius.com, and Paste Magazine.com. Additionally, her self-published zine "Cicatrizes" gained recognition on AfroPunk.com. Through her extensive travels, Nia has developed a unique photography and video portfolio that captures the essence of diverse cultures. Her first solo art show, "Drapetomania; The Strong Urge to Escape," showcased a stunning documentation of her experiences within Afro-Latino communities and delved into thought-provoking themes like environmental racism, African spiritual practices, femicide, black Brazilian feminism, haircut culture, and Love. Notably, her video works from this exhibition have been screened at the Rio Museum of Modern Art and the Genderhouse Festival of Aarhus, Denmark. Moreover, Nia's extraordinary efforts led to the establishment of the Black Femme Supremacy Film Festival during a weekend event planning session at her art show. This festival has notably transformed the landscape of black film in Baltimore City and gained significant support from Ava DuVernay's ARRAY ASCEND film advocacy initiative. Celebrating its fifth year in 2022, the festival continues to deliver groundbreaking programming and foster meaningful community connections. As a filmmaker, Nia has co-produced "Not About a Riot," a compelling documentary uncovering the untold story of the 2015 Baltimore Uprising. Additionally, she served as the art coordinator for the acclaimed documentary "Ballet After Dark," which premiered at the esteemed Tribeca Film Festival in 2019. Nia's talents extend beyond film as her creative non-fiction has been featured in The Coalition Zine and Hysteria Zine, while her intriguing erotica has found a home on Autostraddle.com. Furthermore, she has shared her expertise by leading writing workshops for prestigious institutions such as U Penn's Kelly Writers House, MICA, and the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts. Nia's passion for storytelling led her to study speculative fiction under the guidance of Tananarive Due in Philadelphia and creative memoir writing with Kevin Sessums in Eastern Europe. When she's not dedicated to her personal artistic pursuits or indulging in a well-deserved nap, Nia can be found consulting for various cultural organizations in Baltimore City while continuously working towards her dream of visiting Africa. With Nia Hampton's incredible talent, dedication, and unique perspective, she is undoubtedly a creator who leaves an indelible mark on the world of storytelling and teaching.
