If we actually achieve Renaissance or Baroque-style patronage of the arts here I may have to make myself a Baroque gown or do a self-portrait in the style of my ghost goddess Artemisia Gentileschi!

DO THE THING

Yes, I do the thing. As Design Editor for
Locus magazine, a well-known science fiction and fantasy trade journal, I've created art for over 90 Locus covers, as well as the cover design and typography, and countless interior illustrations and ads!

That's 90, yes. And it's a monthly, so you can imagine the type of schedule involved!

My target for
Locus has been to keep the magazine fresh-looking. I try to always explore a different look and challenge myself with new media each month. I've also art-directed, with editor-in-chief Liza Groen Trombi, a number of covers by our off-site freelancer (the wonderful Stephen H. Segal), and have spearheaded several art-focused issues of Locus with Liza. To my great glee, I have selected up-and-coming artists to spotlight in the magazine and in various other venues.
I've exhibited and sold art at Worldcon and World Fantasy and hope to do so again once we get back into in-person conventions.

Recent career milestones: I had an amazing opportunity to have two pieces of art in the "Worlds Beyond Here: The Expanding Universe of APA Science Fiction" exhibit at the Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience in Seattle. My pieces in the show were "Silkpunk", illustrating Ken Liu's May 2015
Locus interview, and "Axioms & Theorems" illustrating Yoon Ha Lee's September 2014 Locus interview.

(Thanks so much Ken Liu for recommending the work!) I was also listed in the "Special Thanks" portion of the exhibit for providing a giant list of great APA artists to the curators, which is honestly almost more meaningful to me than having my own art there. I take every opportunity I can get to promote the work of great artists in the field.

I have a lifelong love of science fiction and fantasy literature, and working as a designer, artist, and editor for
Locus and the Locus Science Fiction Foundation is a dream job which has enabled me to travel the world and meet many of my heroes. I've worked in publishing for over fifteen years now, thirteen of them with Locus. I'm 100% sure I'm in the right place, doing the right thing, contributing to the right community, and I want to continue doing that.

PORTRAITURE

Talk about the Le Guin cover reminds me I need to address what I'm most excited about currently: portraiture. They say, when you're searching your heart to discover your subjects, you ought to go back to the days when you doodled as a kid and try to remember what your subjects were. That's not hard, my subjects were people. Specifically, faces (and mostly women's faces, for whatever reason). Oh, and mermaids. Yep, gotta draw mermaids.

H'm, actually, then there was this, doodled on the back of Marin County Library periodical request slips back in the days when my mom was a substitute librarian, so that just goes to show you, never listen to what "they" say.

But seriously, faces have always fascinated me. Grand Master Ursula K. Le Guin, 88, died January 22, 2018. For her portrait for the memorial issue of
Locus, I worked from a number of references, about 7-10 photos, some depicting skin textures, others the form of her head. There wasn't one particular photo I wanted to work from. Instead, I triangulated what I could of her features from references spanning many years of her remarkable life.

The memorial portrait in progress, from gestural drawing to final.

When you look intently at so many photos of a person over so many years, you start to actually see a bit of their character. The more I looked at her face, the more I realized we were dealing with an imp. There is this mischievousness and irrepressible spirit in even her most solemn portraits. The portrait gave me a chance to contemplate and reflect on her life and influence, and to gently ease myself into the idea of a world without this incredibly powerful figure in it — and an unusual opportunity to try to help others undergo the same process.

A note on technique — at first I thought I'd use the tried-and-true Michelangelo method of graphing the face into quadrants (and rediscovered one of my mother's old drawing tools, a simple 8.5x11 transparency with an inch grid on it), but like I said no one reference was working for me, so the technique proved to be much less useful than it ordinarily is!

Evolution of the workspace

Because I spend so much time on portraits, I'm not gonna wanna stare for a full month at photos of certain media personalities. I'd much rather do a portrait of someone who isn't well-known, but has an interesting face! For the Fantasmagoriac level, you'll receive the original pencil or paint and, if there is a digital background component, a print of the digital final as well, suitable for framing. I will retain the rights to the image, unless we discuss it beforehand. Consent must be obtained from any living public figures you want me to draw. (If it's a portrait of a family member or surprise for a friend you know well, no need. And if it's a media star we can agree on, no need. But for people in the industry, like authors, editors, and so on, I'd like for them to know what we're doing. When people have a Locus interview, they know their image will be public, I just wanna make sure we have the same level of consent from anyone who might not otherwise expect an intimate portrait!)

SELF-PORTRAITS

Self-portraits are fun too! And so is modeling, which I occasionally do for artful friends. If you follow the Patreon, you'll hear more about that. I design all my own clothing and
either make it myself or have it made from fabric I source in LA.

GOALS

My primary goal with this Patreon is to get out of financial panic mode and into calm, connected, creative mode. I'd also like to explore the accountability structure of Patreon. Let's see if I can build in deadlines and responsibilities for personal projects as well as professional ones!

In particular, working on that Le Guin portrait
reminded me how much I miss practical artwork. I like getting my hands
dirty! I'd like to reawaken life sketching skills, play with Photoshop
brushes till I can replicate the feel of working with oils and acrylics,
and otherwise expand my skillset and body of work.

Locus. I really enjoy making spaceships.

WHY CROWDFUNDING/ LET'S TALK ABOUT MONEY!

I work for a nonprofit magazine! They pay me as well as they can, but even so my salary falls into a category well beneath the (admittedly inflated) Bay Area poverty line. It's pretty ridiculous — the best-practice recommendation is to spend about 30% of your gross monthly income on housing. At this point housing costs eat an average of 90% of my take-home. Forget about dental work or auto maintenance! Many of my side projects, stopgaps, and cushions have fallen prey to Covid-19 shortages, and I'm facing a heartbreaking crossroads, as are many people enduring the Covid-19 crisis. I'm looking at the very strong possibility of needing to either change jobs or sell my beloved home during one of the worst possible housing markets and under the worst conditions.

Why does this feel so Dickensian!?!
Here, have a George Cruikshank illustration of Seven Dials circa 1835.
(No, it's not one of my illustrations, obviously.)

Further, only moving out of the area completely would really save me, as local rental expenses are comparable to my current expenditures. The median Oakland rental rate is $2,930 and the median apartment size is 792 square feet, which is higher than what I pay and for a smaller space (and to own!) IT'S CRAZY! The area has already lost so many artists because of calculations like these. I grew up here, and it's home. So much of my found family is here, my lifesaving medical care team is here. It would be a tragedy to be forced to move, particularly at a time like this. At the best of times, and in the best of circumstances and health, moving is a huge deal. For me, with my health, it would be devastating. That's just a fact. If I lose the house I will also lose my only meaningful retirement planning.

But, if I wish to remain in the Bay, I have to almost double my current income.

So, why not stop working for
Locus, and instead hunt down a job in tech or even office support, as concerned friends have been advising I should do for years? Well, I believe in what I do, and I believe that the community I do it for is important. I don't want to obliterate all my hopes for myself and this rewarding career without exploring other options. Patreon is one such option! I refuse to give up without a fight!

I'm trying to see this financial crunch as an opportunity to prioritize art and community in my life and to refocus my art and writing goals. It's an extraordinary thing to have a job that allows me to do art, event planning, and general rabble-rousing, and get PAID for doing it! Now I'd like to do more art outside of traditional deadline constraints.

Patreon: mutual inspiration, community support. What's not to love? It has to be possible.

This is a big fish. Like, a really big fish.
But sometimes, fish can be as big as you think they can be.

I know those who've played it both ways, doing high-labor, low-love jobs with great take-home, and passion projects for low pay. Those friends continue to envy me for this passion project I'm on, even knowing what it costs. Meaningful work, isn't that the dream? That said, I'd love not to have to look at price ranges when buying toothpaste. That ain't right either! I've set the ultimate goal at $3,000 per month, which is high but doable, as long as I treat this as a second job. At this level of support, I'd be able to afford to live in the Bay Area, sustain ongoing medical challenges, afford things like a good monthly gym membership and car maintenance, and even set aside a small bit for the future! Even reaching one or two thousand would make a huge difference in combination with additional freelance work.

WHAT WOULD I DO, BEYOND WHAT I'VE ALREADY EXPRESSED, IF I ACHIEVED THIS GOAL WITH YOUR HELP?

I HAVE NO IDEA!

I can't even conceive of this level of financial freedom, so it's hard for me to speculate about how this would open up my creative life. It's a journey that Patreon supporters would take beside me, discovering what my full capabilities are. I think I'm up for a lot of shenanigans. There are goals and projects so secret I won't even talk much about them here yet: non-fiction writings, essays, publications, even (*whispers dirtily*) novels, that I'd like to embark upon.

MORE ABOUT ME

So, who is Francesca Myman? What else do you need to know? Think SF/F art and non-fiction, cephalopods, and social justice. The academic stuff: I'm a graduate of Clarion West Writing Workshop and Yale University, and hold two graduate degrees in English and creative writing, interdisciplinary with classes in art, design, film, and criticism (from California College of the Arts and Hollins University, which happens to be one of the most beautiful places in the world, it's basically Hobbiton with cicadas and fireflies). I thought for a while there I'd be a professor, I love teaching that much, but I ended up in a field perfectly suited to all my loves and talents: writing, art, community-building — namely publishing! From convention news coverage around the world to art & design on the fly, it's been a crazy ride!

If you don't know about
Locus, it's the magazine of record for the science fiction, fantasy, and horror field, founded by Charles N. Brown, and is famous
for its book reviews and news coverage going all the way back to 1968.
The magazine has won 30 Hugos over the years, and once I was even on
hand to accept an Alfie from George R.R. Martin with Liza Groen Trombi and all the
other Locusites present, for
Locus (which was awesome, honestly a career highlight I'll never forget).
A favorite selfie with Liza right after
Locus won the Alfie.

Locus has a rich visual history, from the delicious early mimeographed versions with their oft-raunchy spot art to the red-trimmed classics (emulating the authority of Time magazine of course!) It has been a privilege to helm a substantial redesign. I've completely changed the look of the magazine, with the support of my art-director-editor-in-chief-friend Liza Groen Trombi.

My first-ever
Locus cover, September 2010, a steampunk feature, did not have the red border, but did keep the border dimensions intact! That texture in the background was scanned from my grandmother's beat-up old brass makeup compact! And I've known Gail since high school, so it was particularly fun to do a cover with her on it!

I've taken a leading role in curating the art books section of the Locus Recommended Reading List for at least seven or eight years alongside editor-in-chief Liza Groen Trombi, art books reviewer Karen Haber, and Arnie Fenner, founder of Spectrum and Spectrum Live.

ADDITIONAL PHRANISHMENTS

Outside of Patreon, I offer developmental editing services. I was one of the famous original beta readers for some of Gail Carriger's early bestsellers, before she became so prolific that I couldn't keep up with her! Plus of course I have many years of experience workshopping and critiquing fiction from Clarion West onward, and editing/writing news work for
Locus, though as the only on-staff designer I do less writing for them now and more arty things! I also offer book cover design (my favorite thing), spot illustration, photo retouching (wedding photos!), and other freelance work.
If there's something on that list that you need, check in with me about rates. I've already worked out something with someone who wasn't as interested in the exact Patreon rewards for the higher levels but had something else in mind: a combination developmental editor/graphic design inspiration provider/writing coach. Works for me!

"The Obelisk", cover art for N.K. Jemisin's October 2018 Locus interview. For this one, I will ever be infamous amongst friends for texting them, "OK, so who wants to get naked for me and pretend to be in a giant crystal?" It says something about my friends how many were willing without any additional explanation. Of course, there's clothes on the final figure, but those were Photoshopped for a certain look!

You can see examples of my art at
francesca.net/portfolio, in progress.

I OWE YOU TRANSPARENCY

Regarding goals, friends tell me I need to set realistic goals since I'm working hard, and have substantial health challenges that arise from time to time. I vow to transparency — if I am having a demanding month and need to prioritize the day job, you will know about it, and you will get to see some of the behind-the-scenes thoughts related to my artwork and challenges, and I believe that will have value too. I don't anticipate troubles with delivering on Patreon promises, but if issues arise they will be communicated about.

IN CONCLUSION

In brief — I'd like this to be both an experimental crucible and a
safe-ish place where I can explore my work and life, while hewing to my
core values of community, kindness, and enthusiasm. I hope that we will all be inspired!
